About the Organizers
Sinan Aral
Sinan Aral studies how the flow of information in organizational networks affects information worker productivity, and how information diffusion in massive online networks influences demand patterns, ecommerce behaviors and word of mouth marketing. Some recent representative papers include:

Sinan Aral obtained his PhD in Information Systems from MIT. He is a faculty member in the Information, Operations and Management Sciences department of the NYU Stern School of Business and affiliated faculty at MIT

His research has been awarded theMicrosoft Faculty Fellowship (2010), anNSF CAREER Award (2009), the ICIS Best Overall Paper Award (2006, 2008), the ICIS Best Paper in IT Economics Award (2006), the ICIS Best Paper in IT Business Value Research Award (2006), the ACM SIGMIS Best Dissertation Award (2007), and the 2009 IBM Faculty Award. Sinan is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Northwestern University and holds masters degrees from the London School of Economics and Harvard University. He has been a Fulbright Scholar and is currently on the Academic Advisory Board of the Institute for Innovation and Information Productivity.

Foster Provost
Foster Provost studies statistical data mining and predictive modeling with networked data. Some recent representative papers include:

Foster Provost is a Professor of Information Systems and NEC Faculty Fellow at New York University Stern School of Business. He has won several awards, including IBM Faculty Awards for outstanding research in data mining and machine learning, a President’s Award from NYNEX Science and Technology, a Best Paper Award from the ACM SIGKDD conference, and two awards in SIGKDD’s annual KDDCUP data mining competition. Professor Provost is editor-in-chief of the journal Machine Learning and a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Machine Learning Research (JMLR) and the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research (JAIR). He was elected as a founding board member of the International Machine Learning Society. He also has advised several U.S. government agencies on policy and investments in data mining research.

Professor Provost has a B.S. from Duquesne University in Physics and Mathematics and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Pittsburgh.

 

 

Arun Sundararajan
Arun Sundararajan
studies the economics of networks, how information technology alters economic development, interpersonal interaction and the formation of social structures, how local (network) effects are mediated by underlying social networks, and the diffusion of information and economic influence in online networks. Some recent representative papers include:

Arun Sundararajan is an Associate Professor and NEC Faculty Fellow in the Information, Operations and Management Sciences department of NYU Stern School of Business, and the SRITNE Distinguished Academic Fellow at the Indian School of Business for 2010-11. He coordinates Stern’s undergraduate core course in information systems and is Director of their IS doctoral program. Professor Sundararajan has published in journals that include Decision Support Systems, Economics Letters, Information Systems Research, Journal of Economic Literature, Journal of Management Information Systems, Management Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and Statistical Science, and has given over 100 conference and invited presentations internationally. His research has won three Best Paper awards and has been profiled by numerous trade publications. His opinion pieces have appeared in the Financial Times, the Economic Times, and Business World. Professor Sundararajan is a Senior Editor at Information Systems Research, has served on the editorial boards of Management Science and MIS Quarterly, and serves on the advisory board of the business/ecommerce journal of the Social Sciences Research Network. He consults for leading technology, electronic commerce and media organizations.
